USM-KLE World Geriatric Day/International Day of Old Person 2013


Each year on 1st of October, the world celebrates World Geriatric Day, which also known as International Day of Old Person, The holiday is celebrated by raising awareness about issues affecting the elderly, such as senescence and elder abuse. It is also a day to appreciate the contributions that older people make to society.

On 1st of October 2013, USMKLE Phase 2 Year 3(2nd batch) student with the guidance of Community Medicine Department has organized World Geriatric Day in a village called Basavan Kudachi, the village where we're currently doing our Community & Family Case Study(CFCS). Basavan Kudachi is a Jain village located about 10km away from Belgaum. Our aim is to spread the awareness regarding health issues affecting the elderly, especially hypertension. The exhibition was held in the school hall of Basavan Kudachi, opposite to the Temple Hall.

The exhibition booth consist of these following topic:
1.Chronic Disease in old man:
-Hypertension
-Diabetes Mellitus
-Rheumatic and Ischaemic Heart Disease
-Blindness

2.Nutrition
-Balanced Diet
         
3.General geriatric health

With the help of social worker and health worker, we are able to convey the message that is written in the poster and explain them to old people who have visited our exhibition.
Last but not least, we also have a booth of Hypertension Screening, where every visitor will get their blood pressure screened. The exhibition started at 9am and ended at 3 noon.
